What is a UID number?

The UID is the Swiss business identification number (Unternehmens-Identifikationsnummer). Every business in Switzerland gets exactly one, issued by the Federal Statistical Office. It is used by all authorities: commercial register, VAT, AHV/AVS, customs and tax administration.

The number stays the same even if the company moves or changes its name. It is public and may appear on invoices, quotes and your website.

How the UID is structured

The UID consists of the prefix CHE and nine digits written in three groups of three. The last digit is a check digit that catches typos.

UID, VAT number and commercial register number

UID

The one number for all authorities. Format CHE-123.456.789.

VAT number

The same UID with the suffix MWST (TVA/IVA). Only exists if the company is registered for VAT. Since 2014 it replaces the old six-digit VAT number.

Commercial register number

The internal number of the commercial register, format CH-020.3.917.603-5. It appears on the register extract but is rarely needed day to day.

Even without a commercial register entry

Every business receives a UID, not just AG and GmbH. It is assigned automatically as soon as you register with one of these offices:

Sole proprietorships below CHF 100,000 turnover do not have to register in the commercial register. Their UID is therefore not in this search but in the federal UID register or on the confirmation from the compensation office. Search the federal UID register

Does the UID have to be on the invoice?

If you are registered for VAT, your VAT number (UID plus MWST) must appear on every invoice. The VAT Act requires it, otherwise your customer cannot deduct input tax.

Without VAT registration the UID is optional. Many businesses print it anyway because customers and accountants can identify the company unambiguously.
